You can teach an old dog new tricks; make sure you don’t fall for that age old misconception. No matter what your dog’s age is, you can still get him or her trained properly. Use the tips from the article below to develop your own training strategies. You just need to take simple steps to dog training

Teach Them a Name

Dogs don’t understand the importance of using names like we do. A dog only uses associations he or she has already learned. In order to get your dog to respond to the name you have given him or her it is important to help your dog associate good things with the name.

For the first few weeks of training, give your dog a biscuit or bone every time he or she properly responds to their name and only use their name in praising, not to scold. If you use the dog’s name to scold him or her, they will eventually back up and not respond at all as they will feel threatened instead of rewarded.

Know Who’s The Boss

You need to show your pet who is boss, taking simple steps to dog training without making your pet feel like you’re threatening him or her. People often lose patience during the course of the training and feel that they will get a better response when they raise their voice or add scolding phrases. This is not the case when it comes to dog training. Use an authoritative voice towards your pet so he or she understands that this is not playtime, but also avoid yelling or raising your voice in anger. It is important that your pet trusts you and feels comfortable around you.

A Reward Helps But Don’t Over Do it

when starting with simple steps to dog training don’t offer a treat to your dog every time he or she gets a command right and follows through. Many people adore their dogs, but handle the training irresponsibly. Giving your dog a biscuit every time he or she understands a command will result in you having to give your dog a biscuit each time he or she does something. This will basically create an association for your dog that no matter what he or she does, a biscuit will be the reward. You want to reach a fair point where you reward when it’s due and your dog has excelled at something new.

Make Dog Training Fun For You Both

Dog training is a trying pastime and people can lose their patience when the dog refuses to listen. However, under no circumstances should you hit your dog. Hitting your dog not only borderlines animal abuse, but fosters a feeling of fear within your pet. If you hit him or her, you are making your pet afraid to come near you which may result in you getting attacked. If your dog upsets you, take a few moments aside to be by yourself and relax, then continue training. It is important that you’re in a good mood and have the patience to train your dog before starting.

Let Your Dog Run Around Before You Stare Training

Before training your dog, make sure he or she gets the excitement out of their system. Your dog is more likely to listen to you after he has gone to the bathroom first and gotten a bit of exercise. Training is much like schoolwork to your dog, so make sure you give him or her some recess time before moving on. Give your dog a break every fifteen minutes or half an hour because they lose focus quickly if the training is not interesting.

Dogs Do Forget

Dogs, much like humans, do tend to forget things as time goes by. It’s like learning a new dance routine; you need to reinforce the old steps before continuing onto the new ones. When training your dog to sit and fetch for example, always go back to sitting before moving onto teaching how to fetch. This way you refresh your dog’s memory and also continue on with his or her training.

A dog’s behavior is just a reflection of his or her owner’s behavior. Pets greatly rely on our ability to behave and act well, often taking after us in mannerisms. With patience and hard work, you can teach your dog new tricks as well as obedient behavior.

Very useful piece of writing. This completely changes the way I view my dogs. I always thought that they must be taught when they are in their puppy stages. Never knew you could train them no matter how old they are. I tried it on my 4 year old dog and it really does work. Thank you!

Thanks Oscar for the great advice about the Simple Steps to Dog Training. I might add that dogs are more inclined to remember when there is an emotion attached to the training.

In most case a pleasant feeling through a pat and a reward for a job well done is enough to re-enforce the training and repetition is also key.

When you have taught your dog a new command make sure you practice that new command and give an appropriate reward at least once a day for a couple of weeks and then every second day until you are confident that they have learned the new command.

Dog will always remember pain and the emotions associated with pain. They are guided first and foremost by their sense of smell and identify humans first by smell and then by sight.

I knew of a man who kicked a 10 week old pup who was very excited and jumping up on him. That pup grew in to a very large Rhodesian Ridge back and the man could never enter the yard or the home without the owners present to lock the dog in another room. The dog never acted aggressively toward any other person his whole life.

Hitting or kicking a dog is never acceptable – if you are training a dog you need first to establish trust – that trust is lost as soon as you hurt the dog.

  12. These are very simple steps to follow for dog training. I really can’t stand people who hit their animals and expect them to obey them. I think its a trust you have to build up with you and your dog and they will become your best friend. My cousin has an old dog who understands every word he says. He can draw a line in the dirt and tell the dog “no cross” and the dog will not go over the line. Great for when he is visiting people without fences.
